Players skills determine the chances of a player being successful during a match. Each skill has its own importance, you may consider a skill more or less important depending on how you want your team to play. Here's a quick overview:

Keeping: responsible for 60% of goalkeeper defense power; not used by other players
Tackle: determine how good a player is on taking the ball from an opponent; not used by goalkeepers
Passing: pass accuracy
Shooting: ability to shoot; not used by goalkeepers
Speed: responsible for 40% of goalkeeper defense power on defending shots, other players use it to run
Dribble: ability to get rid of an opponent trying to tackle you; used by keepers to limit their defensive power if your formation does not have any defender on mentalities -1 or 0
Control: determine player speed when running with the ball and ability to control the ball after intercepting a pass; responsible for 20% of shot quality on free kicks; for goalkeepers it's used to decide if he catches, deflects or punch teh ball to outside the field in a good defense
Header: used on high ball disputes and headers towards the goal, also responsible for 40% of goalkeeper defense power on defending headers
Aggressiveness: how aggressive player tackle is; aggressive players tend to make more fouls; not used by goalkeepers

A player receives penalties in all his skills when used in the wrong position within a formation. Putting a DA in the midfield, a left player in the center and so on will have different effects. The following two tables summarizes the penalties.
