[edit] Registering

Registering to RubySoccer is very simple. Follow the Register link in the main screen, fill all the fields in the following screen and click Signup. You'll receive an email with your temporary password in a few minutes.

[edit] Entering a dimension

After loging in you'll be redirected to the Enter Dimension screen. There you can see a list of our dimensions. A dimension is a self-contained world in RubySoccer, with its own countries, leagues, teams, etc. You can play in one or many dimensions, being able to manage one team in each one of them. Teams from different dimensions will never play against each other. In fact, things in one dimension happen like there are no other dimensions! Each dimension has its own update frequency. An update (or tick) is a RubySoccer event where many important things are processed, like matches simulation, player transfers, contract renewals, cup draws and so on. You are unable to enter the dimension during the tick. If you are not sure which dimension should you go first, choose the one with less updates per day, so you can learn the game in a slower pace. You can always change your mind, quit from your team in one dimension and join another, or even play on more than one dimension.

[edit] Choosing a team

The first thing you have to do is choose a team. In order to do that you must go to the countries screen by clicking in the world globe icon, in the top menu. A list of countries grouped in continents will be displayed. Select the country where you'd like to play. You'll be redirected to the country screen where you'll be able to see the first division league table. Above the league table there are links to other divisions, the country's national cup and the transfer market. Teams with a person icon alongside their names are already being managed by someone, while the ones with a screen icon are cpu managed (these are the ones you can apply for). Clicking on the team names will take you to the team info screen, where you can then navigate through the team players, history, planned matches and a few more details. Once you have decided which teams you want to apply for you can click the "Manage this team" link in the team info screen. You can apply for more than one team, but there's currently no way to set your priorities. Multiple managers can apply for the same team, only one of them will get the job (or maybe none, if they're accepted in other teams first). The applications are processed during the tick, so you'll have to wait for it and check back later. Hint: in the Manager Configurations screen (gear icon) you can set whether or not you want to receive your in-game message in your real email. Marking this option allows you to know what happened during the last tick checking your email. It's specially useful to know when you're not used to the tick times, as you'll receive emails when the tick ends (unless nothing important happened with you or your team).

[edit] Setting up your squad

Now that you are a manager you should setup your first squad. Take a time to analyze your players in the team players screen. Our formation system is very flexible, allowing you to use ANY formation, from the usual 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 to the completely unrealistic 10-0-0, 1-2-7 and so on. When you are ready click in the Team Setup option in the menu (the drawing board icon).

The field is displayed vertically, with your keeper in the bottom. Above the keeper the field is divided in 9 lines, named D -1,D 0, D +1, M -1, M 0, M +1, A -1, A 0 and A +1. The letter indicates the position the line refers to (D for defense, M for midfield and A for attack) and the number indicates the player mentality if placed on that line. That means a player in the D +1 line for instance will be a defender that tends to move forward more often while a player in the A -1 position will be an attacker that also goes back to the midfield. RubySoccer players are able to play in one or two positions. If you look at the position attribute of your players you'll see one of these: G, D, M, A, DA, DM, MA, MD, AD, AM. A player with DA as position can play either on defense or attack; if position is MA he can play in midfield or attack. Note that an MA is not an advanced midfielder necessarily, he can play in any midfield or attack position, from M -1 to A +1. Players placed in a position different than the one(s) specified in his position attribute will receive some penalties and not play so well during match simulation.

Each line in the field has 5 columns. These columns represent different sides of the field (L, LC, C, RC and R). Each player (except goalkeepers) have a side attribute, which can contain one (L, C, R) or two (LC, LR, RC) sides. A R means a player can play in any right position (R, RC), a LC means a player can play in any left (L, LC) or center (LC, C, RC) position. Again, note that LC doesn't mean the player must play in the LC column, but that he can play in any column which contains an L or C. Players in the wrong side also receive penalties during the match.

Now that we've covered positions and sides it's time to select the guys you'll use in your first squad. Your players will be displayed in 4 lists: defenders, midfielders, goalkeepers and attackers. On each list they'll be ordered by the main attribute for that specific list (keeping for goalkeepers, tackle for defenders, passing for midfielders and shooting for attackers). The color of the player icon represent the position they can play, blue for keepers, green for defenders, yellow for midfielders and red for attackers. Those who can play in more than one position will have two colors. If you put the cursor over a player name or icon you'll see their attributes displayed below the field. That will help you choosing the players without having to go back and forth to the players screen.

To place a player in the field simply drag him from one of the lists and drop him in the field position you want him to play. You can also move players already in the field to a new spot. In order to remove a player from the field you can either drop someone over him (he will be replaced) or drag him to the right side of the field (named BENCH) where he will be dropped. Above the field you'll see a red message saying your formation is not complete. As soon as 11 players are in the field that message will be gone.

When you have injured or players with cards for your next match the player icon is replaced with a red cross (for injured) or a card (yellow or red) for carded players. You can still use them in your formations, they will be replaced by the game logic if that formation is used for the next match. If your formation contains unavailable players for the next match you'll see a red message above the field. You shouldn't bother if that's not the formation you're using for the next match.

That's the basic about formations, in the game help you'll find more detailed information about tactics and strategies if you need.
